Autonomy: A Nice Idea in Theory

چکیده
Autonomy is perplexing. It is recognisably and undeniably a critical issue in the field of intelligent agents and multi-agent systems, yet it is often ignored or simply assumed. For many, agents are autonomous by definition, and they see no need to add the tautologous prefix in explicitly considering autonomous agents, while for others autonomy in agents is an important yet problematic issue that demands attention. The difficulty when considering autonomy, however, is that there are different conceptual levels at which to reason and argue, including the philosophical and the practical. The notion of autonomy has associated with it many variations of meaning. According to Steels, autonomous systems must be automatic systems and, in addition, they must have the capacity to form and adapt their behaviour while operating in the environment. Thus traditional AI systems and most robots are automatic but not autonomous — they are not independent of the control of their designers [7].

متن کاملEffect of Using Image-Schemas on Learning L2 Prepositions and Enhancing Learner Autonomy: A Dynamic System Theory and Cognitive Linguistics-Inspired Approach
This study investigated the effect of applying the dynamic system theory (DST) and cognitive linguistics (CL) insights into grammar instruction on EFL learners’ learning of English prepositions and learner autonomy. Sixty Iranian EFL learners at the lower-intermediate level of language proficiency were randomly assigned to 1 experimental and 1 control group. The 2 groups filled out an autonomy ...
متن کاملEngagement and Motivation in EFL Classroom: Humanizing the Coursebook or Autonomy-supportive Teaching Climate?
Humanizing language learning materials helps language teachers to design activities that are linked to learn- ers’ lives and experiences. This can result in higher motivation and engagement in the process of foreign language learning. Self-determination theory-based instruction enhances learners’ engagement and motiva- tion through supporting the basic psychological needs for autonomy, competen...
متن کاملA History of Selected Topics in Categorical Algebra I: From Galois Theory to Abstract Commutators and Internal Groupoids
This paper is a chronological survey, with no proofs, of a direction in categorical algebra, which is based on categorical Galois theory and involves generalized central extensions, commutators, and internal groupoids in Barr exact Mal’tsev and more general categories. Galois theory proposes a notion of central extension, and motivates the study of internal groupoids, which is then used as an a...
متن کاملMotivation and Autonomy in Counseling, Psychotherapy, and Behavior Change: A Look at Theory and Practice
Motivation has received increasing attention across counseling approaches, presumably because clients’ motivation is key for treatment effectiveness. The authors define motivation using a self-determination theory taxonomy that conceptualizes motivation along a relative-autonomy continuum. The authors apply the taxonomy in discussing how various counseling approaches address client motivation a...
